4H judging show, back last winter, we were contacted by the County 4H office, to provide 4 horses for a class to be judged in a 4H judging show. This type of show entails a judge actually judging the class, while the 4H'rs also fill out their judges score cards, and then compare to see how/why the judge placed the horses as she did, and how close the 4H'rs also picked the placings. What a great experience.....I took 4 horses, youngsters Kallie, a yearling, Legacy, a 2 year old, Flitty Wren a 2 year old, and Breezy, a mature, 5 year old mare. This type of event, is something we are dedicated to doing in our program. Not only is it a donation of time/effort to the 4H'rs , who are tomorrow's horse owners/buyers, it schools our horses to learn to handle all sorts of different situations...the day went well, I started early, with baths for all, as my stock never leaves the ranch, without stellar grooming jobs. A friend hauled 2 horses for me, I hauled the other 2. We were loaded and on our way in just a few minutes...
We arrived at the fairgrounds to lots and lots of noise and confusion, as there had been a retreat over the weekend, and those folks were just in the process of breaking camp and leaving. We unloaded to blaring horns, garbage flying all over, a stiff springtime wind, and some really warm temps...close to 100 degrees. I had broke the horses into 2 groups for the hauling, the duns and the blacks....they also base their friendships this way, so I knew it would work out. Our horses stayed tied to the trailer until their class time, and handled all the noise and confusion around them so well. All these girls are going to be rock solid as riding horses, they just have that stellar attitude. The horses entered the ring, and as they were being judged, there was a "horse eating plastic bag" go right under their noses in the strong wind...not one of my horses moved a foot! The judge was very pleased with the class behaviour, as the other classes did not mind their manners so well. My "girls" showed off their kind and trusting temperament, to handlers they had never met before ( the show provides handlers ) and their great minds and hearts. Once the class was over, we headed back to the trailer, where they got their hay supply and fresh water, and lots of petting as a reward for a job well done.
The judge placed Flitty Wren first, she is certainly the most balanced of the youngsters at the moment....Legacy was placed second, but really, the judge told me later, was in the virtual tie with Kallie....Kallie, however, is a little rump high, and of course, as a yearling, not the best time to be judged, and Breezy was placed fourth....
Here are some of my favorite pics of the day! The girls were just SO very good, they had been out on pasture, and had only a short ( and I mean really short ) schooling session before the show. I love the pic of the girls at the trailer, after their class, with the jet liner in the background, not a foot was moved!
